Crystal Reign is the first grand strategy MMO to be built using the Ethereum network, drawing many gameplay mechanisms from successful mainstream titles in the strategy genre and augmenting them with new capabilities provided by blockchain technology.
GAME MECHANICS
With these points in mind we set out to craft a gaming experience that synergized all the various aspects of Ethereum games that make them so lucrative whilst also keeping in consideration the game design principles that have contributed to a multi-billion-dollar MMO industry outside of the cryptosphere.
Crystal Reign is the amalgamation of this effort, a free-to-play, browser based, grand strategy MMO that aims to address these gameplay mechanics that are currently lacking in the cryptogames market:
• L o n g e v i t y o f p l ay :
• Social Immersion.
• Symbiosis between game and currency
• Economic Stability.
Outlined in this section is an overview of the game structure. In the following section we discuss how our token interacts with the mechanisms described.

REGISTRATION
The game utilizes Web3 and ReactJS to provide users with a fluid and responsive interface that facilitates blockchain interaction seamlessly. Registration occurs through Metamask and accounts are logged in an Authentication contract. As account names and corresponding Ethereum addresses are stored on the blockchain, users can login through their Metamask without the need for a password.
THE WORLD MAP
Upon registration users are allocated a random tile on the world map with which to build their city on. The world map houses 640,000 tiles and are assigned to one of five different biomes. These biomes give strategic bonuses to armies and provide settlements situated on them with production bonuses in one of the five main resources. Optimized chunk loading allows for players to traverse the map seamlessly while our swoop camera gives them the ability to oversee complex strategic maneuvers with a simple mouse scroll. Across the map markers denote trade caravans, raiding parties and animals to be hunted. These provide the basis for an intricate, player-driven gaming ecosystem where users can make a name for themselves as wealthy traders or merciless bandits.
THE CITY PANEL

The city panel is an interface which provides users with the ability to construct and manage their settlement. Each settlement consists of 20 construction plots and 25 resource plots. Resource plots provide a continual stream of basic resources which are used to produce weapons, units and buildings. The central building is the Keep which allows users to set tax rates and regulate gold production at the expense of basic resource production.

There are a further 7 buildings concerned with the production of armor and weapons. These buildings can produce standard weapons from basic materials or produce more specialized equipment using rare materials harvested from the world map. In total there are 70 items that can be produced currently with plans to add additional items in the future.

Barracks produce the various combat units for use in armies. There are 5 types of units which, at their core, form a basic rock-paper-scissors dynamic. However, this is offset by a wide range of tactical considerations such as terrain types, commander perks, division structures and relic abilities. This is made more intricate by the addition of light/heavy variations of the units which are produced with leather and plate armor respectively

Military Institutes allow for the production of commanders, unique units that control armies. Commanders are unique customizable units which give additional boosts to the armies they control. These boosts can be obtained through spending either cryptocurrency or through spending “souls”, one of which is obtained for each unit killed by a commander’s army. Each commander has a selection of 25 perks which influence the outcomes of battles and enhance existing environmental bonuses.

Altars allow for the production of “relics”, special equipment that can be harnessed by commanders to gain an edge against opposing armies. These weapons are dropped by defeated armies in combat and gain more power for each unit they kill. Relics keep track of the cumulative statistics of all its owners and can be traded between users or taken in battle. Drawing from the various ERC721 tokens we have tried to make these items appealing as both collectors’ items and useful tools for competing in game. We expect some weapons to gain notoriety as they are used in particularly bloody or decisive battles.
COMBAT MECHANICS
The military panel provides detailed information about the player’s current armies. Each army requires a commander which can be recruited at a Military Institute in the city and can have 3 divisions. Each army can carry a number of items equivalent to its size and these items can be distributed to each of the divisions.
Armies have several strategic options available dependent on the experience of their commander and the development of their city: Attack/Raid – Players can choose to either engage in quick skirmishes to loot equipment from an opposing army or they can fight until an enemy force is completely depleted.
Ambush/Camp – Armies can occupy a tile and conduct reconnaissance from there.
With the correct skills the army can remain hidden and wait for an enemy to occupy the tile before attacking. Siege/Reinforce – Occupying a city tile places it under siege.
This prevents its armies and caravans from leaving until the siege is lifted.
GUILDS
Guilds can be formed or joined by players who own consulates and allow players to organize strategic maneuvers together. As rewards from these actions can often be very rewarding we have taken care to develop an advanced distribution system that uses the Ethereum blockchain to distribute spoils of war in a safe and trustless way.
A detailed permissions system is used to ensure that guild leaders can form strong social hierarchies within their guilds without losing control. Members with the correct privileges can even set directives for others and pay rewards on completion. This adds the presence of player-driven quests, a feature that is highly sought after in MMO’s.
Tribal – Distributed winnings according to kill counts on tiles with shard drops.
Feudal – Distributed according to rank.
Distributions can be set by rank in the guild panel.
Egalitarian – Distribute winnings evenly amongst the guild.
